About the Composer
Adam Leatherman is a a composer for interactive media, creating music for video games influenced by his world music studies and interests in high fantasy genres. Adam is also a musician and educator who uses his dynamic musical interests and background to inform his “students-as-creators” focused teaching style. The projects he creates for his students include musique concrete style works, electronic compositions based on student-generated visual art, and student-written and recorded popular style music. He has performed as a singer, trombonist, and conductor across the globe, most notably at Melk Abby in Austria. Adam holds a Bachelor of Music degree in music education from West Virginia University and is currently pursuing his master's degree in music technology from Southern Utah University. He holds a certificate of World Music Pedagogy from the Smithsonian Institute and is an Avid Certified Pro Tools Specialist.
In his compositions, Adam believes in combining traditional, popular, and avant-garde styles to create interesting and surprising works. Adam is currently working on writing concept music for a video game adaptation of the Amber Chronicles by Roger Zelazny. He is combining his knowledge of world music, modern pop, orchestral music, and wind band to create an innovative and surprising soundtrack.
As an educator, Adam believes in empowering his students to be creators as well as interpreters. He pushes his students to think outside the box with their compositions and incorporate their interests outside of music into their work. He sponsors a songwriting club for his students where he guides students in their writing, gives safe spaces to share and discuss their work, and records and produces their tracks. He has premiered orchestral compositions by his students with the school orchestra and wind ensemble, and has transcribed and arranged orchestral versions of popular music to showcase talented student vocalists.
